Rose petals at the Pantheon

Once a year, firefighters on the roof pour red rose petals through the open eye of the dome as the Mass ends below. In 2027 that happens on Sunday 16 May.

Pentecost Sunday is the one day the Pantheon's oculus lets in something other than light and rain. At the end of the morning Mass, Rome's firefighters drop thousands of red rose petals through the 9-metre opening, 43 metres above the floor.

It is a religious service first and a spectacle second. Here is when it happens in 2027, how to get a place inside and what to plan around it.

The quick answer

The rose petal rain is on Pentecost Sunday, which in 2027 is 16 May (Easter 2027 is 28 March, and Pentecost comes 49 days later). The Mass starts at 10:30 and the petals fall around noon. Entry is free and cannot be booked; the faithful are let in until the church is full. Queue by 7:00 to 9:00 depending on how close to the oculus you want to be.

When is Pentecost 2027, and what time do the rose petals fall?

Sunday 16 May 2027. The solemn Mass begins at 10:30, and the petals come down at the end of it, around 12:00.

Pentecost falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter. Easter 2027 is on 28 March, so Pentecost is 16 May 2027; we checked the date by calculation and against published calendars. The date moves a lot from year to year, as the table shows.

The timing is steady. Turismo Roma lists the solemn Mass at 10:30 and the petals around noon, and the 2026 edition on 24 May followed the same pattern. Check Turismo Roma's event page in spring 2027 for that year's arrival times.

What happens during the rose petal rain at the Pantheon?

As the Mass ends, firefighters of the Vigili del Fuoco on the roof tip thousands of red rose petals through the oculus, and they float down over the congregation.

The petals stand for the tongues of fire of the Holy Spirit coming down on the apostles, the Pentecost story from the Acts of the Apostles. Turismo Roma traces the custom to early Roman Christian practice and says the modern ceremony was revived in 1995.

The oculus is open to the sky, about 9 metres across. Because the petals drop from 43 metres, they drift rather than fall, settling on the marble floor and on the people below. If you want to know more about the dome itself, read our guide to the oculus and dome.

How do you get inside the Pantheon for the Pentecost petals?

Queue early and attend the Mass. Entry is free, there is no booking, and the doors close to newcomers when the church is full.

There is no ticket for this. Romewise says plainly that it is not possible to book in advance, and recommends being in line by about 7:00. Turismo Roma asked the faithful to arrive by 9:00 in 2025 and let people in only until the permitted capacity was reached. Our advice: 7:00 to 7:30 if you want a spot near the centre, 8:30 at the latest if you only want to be inside.

Once you are in, you stay. The petals come at the end of a solemn Mass that runs well over an hour, and leaving early means losing your spot. Dress as for any church, shoulders and knees covered (our dress code guide lists what gets turned away), bring water and eat before you queue.

How crowded is the Pantheon on Pentecost Sunday?

Full to capacity inside, with a crowd on Piazza della Rotonda that cannot see the petals. Expect a long wait and no room to move.

The rotunda fills well before 10:30. Expect to stand. Photos are possible, but a sea of raised phones will be in most of them. Hold your phone at waist height and shoot up the light shaft for the cleanest view.

Outside is a different story. The petals fall inside the building, so the people left on the piazza see very little. If you missed the cut-off, there is no point waiting at the doors for the moment itself.

Can you visit the Pantheon as a tourist on Pentecost Sunday?

Not in the morning. Like every Sunday, it is closed to sightseers during the 10:30 Mass, and the Pentecost crowd makes the rest of the morning a write-off. Plan your proper visit for another day.

Treat the petals and the sightseeing visit as two different things. On Pentecost you are a guest at a service, without the freedom to walk around the tombs of Raphael and the kings or read the inscriptions. Book a calm weekday slot for that, ideally at 9:00. Saturday 15 May 2027 has an evening Mass at 17:00, so go early that day too.

If you want the story of the building before or after Pentecost, the Pantheon Elite Guided Tour gives you about 40 minutes inside with a licensed guide and entry included, in groups of 20 at most. For something cheaper, Crown Tours' 45-minute visit covers the essentials. Neither runs inside during the Mass.
