Crown Tours · Piazza della Minerva
Crown Tours starts by Bernini's elephant on Piazza della Minerva, then takes you round the back of the Pantheon and inside for half an hour with a live guide and a headset. For $14 it's the cheapest way to get a real person explaining the dome, and guests can stay inside when it ends.

Crown Tours runs this one from Piazza della Minerva, the small square just behind the Pantheon. Its staff wear purple "Crown Tours" t-shirts and wait to the left of the steps of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, next to the marble elephant carrying an obelisk that Bernini designed and his assistant Ercole Ferrata carved in 1667. The first 15 minutes happen there, with the outside of the building and its history. Then the group walks round and goes in.
Inside you get about 30 minutes with a live guide, and everyone wears a headset, which matters in a room this loud. Guests describe archaeologists and art historians among the guides, and one wrote about the noon sunbeam that hits the doorway every 21 April. When the talk ends you're already inside, and several reviews say they stayed on for photos.
The price is the story here. At $14 it costs about what you'd pay for a ticket plus a phone audio guide, and you get a real person. The trade-off is group size: up to 25, and one guest counted 21 on a tour they expected to be smaller. If that worries you, the semi-private tour caps it at 10.
On Piazza della Minerva, to the left of the steps of Santa Maria sopra Minerva and close to the elephant statue.
Headsets on, and the guide covers the building's history and what to look for before you go in.
ID check against the names on the booking, then into the Pantheon with the group.
The dome and the oculus, the floor that drains the rain, the chapels, Raphael's tomb and the royal tombs.
The tour ends inside. Take your photos and leave when you want.
★★★★★The guide was professional and fun. She had so much information without being overwhelming. The meeting spot was clear and it all went smoothly. The equipment and sound worked great. I could always hear her.
★★★★★She explained the construction of the Pantheon, the thickness of the walls, the weight of each door (7 tons!) and the Oculus. She explained what happens each year on April 21st and how the sunlight that goes through the Oculus and reflects on the door.
★★★★★Also the fact that we could walk straight in and miss the long queues was a definite bonus. You can also stay inside the Panthenon to continue to take photos at the end.
★★★★★Entry was quick and easy. We did need to show our passports to enter. No hats allowed. Shoulders and knees have to be covered. Would book it again!!!
