Booking choice: The Pantheon Elite Guided Tour, from $48 per person. Check dates Tour details
Nobody checks your outfit as hard as the Vatican does. But the Pantheon is the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres, and the staff at the door can turn away bare shoulders. Most turned-away visitors are caught out by something else: the name on the ticket.
Here is the short list of rules, taken from the operators' listings and the sites that track the Pantheon closely.
The quick answer
Cover your shoulders and knees, and keep your midriff covered too. Bring a passport or ID card: most booked tickets carry your name. Leave suitcases and large bags at the hotel. Photos are fine without flash, tripods or selfie sticks. The entrance has a ramp and the floor inside is level.

What is the dress code for the Pantheon?
Shoulders and knees covered, for men and women. No tank tops, very short shorts or beachwear.
Several listings say it in capitals. The Elite guided tour: cover knees and shoulders upon entry. The archaeologist's tour: it is necessary to cover the shoulders. The food tour asks for shoulders and knees covered too. RomeWise adds midriffs and notes enforcement varies. A hat or a head covering isn't required.
The easy fix is a light scarf or shirt in your bag. The Neptune tour lists scarves as not included, which tells you they expect you to bring one.

Do men need to take their hats off?
Yes. Take your hat off inside, as in any Italian church. Shorts are fine if they reach the knee.
A guest on the Crown Tours visit summed up the door in October 2026: "We did need to show our passports to enter. No hats allowed. Shoulders and knees have to be covered." Caps go in the bag.
Do you need ID to enter the Pantheon?
On most booked tickets, yes. They are issued in your name, and you show a passport or ID card at the entrance.
- Crown Tours: tickets are nominative; give the full names of all participants and bring ID.
- Kirba Tours semi-private: ID or passport is mandatory for adults and children; names as on the ID and ages at booking.
- Audio ticket and hosted ticket: each traveller shows a valid ID matching the booking name.
- Vatican Tour Company: passport or ID card required; a copy is acceptable.
A photo of your passport on your phone is the minimum. On the semi-private tour, bring the children's documents too.
Meet outside Antica Salumeria, show your ID once, and the guide takes it from there.

Suitcases and large bags are not allowed. A small daypack is normal; ticket sellers quote a limit of 40 x 35 x 15 cm.
If you're going straight from the station, drop the luggage first: there is no point queuing with a case only to be sent back across the piazza. Keep the bag small, zipped and in front of you. The portico and the piazza are crowded, and Rome's pickpockets like crowds.

Can you take photos inside the Pantheon?
Yes, for personal use. No flash, no tripods, no selfie sticks; professional shoots need permission from the Direzione Musei.
The classic shot is straight up at the oculus. One guest had a tip for the selfie version: "I recommend holding the phone at waist level and looking up." Stand a few steps off-centre, not dead under the hole, or you'll be in someone else's photo all morning.
How should you behave inside?
Like in a church: voices down, no food or drinks, and no sightseeing during Mass on Saturday at 17:00 or Sunday at 10:30.
The chapels have altars in use. Don't sit on altar steps or lean on the tombs. Benches line the walls if you need to sit. During a service you either take part or wait outside. The hours and Mass guide has the times.

Ten guests at most, headsets, 50 minutes inside: the quietest way to see a crowded room.
Explore the semi-private tour Tour detailsIs the Pantheon wheelchair accessible?
Yes. A metal ramp on the left side of the portico gives step-free entry, and the floor inside is one level circle.
The ramp is described by Wheelchair Travel. Visitors with a disability and one companion enter free. All eight Pantheon tours and tickets on this site are listed as wheelchair and stroller accessible; the two-hour Trevi and Pantheon walk is not. The piazza itself is cobbled and slopes gently.
The floor is not perfectly flat by design: it rises about 30 cm towards the centre so rain runs off to the drains. You won't notice it in a chair, but you may on a wet day.

What happens if you're late or turned away?
You usually lose the slot and the money. Late arrivals are not guaranteed entry on Crown Tours, and Kirba Tours refunds neither no-shows nor latecomers.
Free cancellation on every tour here runs until 24 hours before, not after. If you're unsure about a scarf, ID or a train, cancel in time or plan a buffer. Hosts meet you 10 to 15 minutes before the slot: be there then.
Book now, decide later: free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
