Pantheon tickets

Since 1 July 2026 the Pantheon costs €7 to enter. Here is who pays less, who pays nothing, how to buy the official ticket, and when a booked tour is worth more than the ticket alone.

For most of its modern life the Pantheon was free. Then in July 2023 Rome started charging €5, and on 1 July 2026 the full price rose to €7 under a new agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Diocese of Rome, signed on 10 April 2026 (Finestre sull'Arte). About 4.5 million people went in during 2025.

Seven euros is still one of the cheapest big tickets in Rome. The confusion starts on booking sites, where the same entry is sold for $10 to $108. Below is what each price really buys.

The quick answer

The full Pantheon ticket is €7 in 2026. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay €2, and under-18s, Rome residents, visitors with a disability plus a companion, and people going to Mass go in free. Everyone is free on the first Sunday of the month. A $10 to $19 Viator ticket adds a timed slot, a host and a phone audio guide; from $14 you get a live guide.

How much is a Pantheon ticket in 2026?

€7 for a full ticket since 1 July 2026. Before that it was €5, from July 2023 to 30 June 2026.

The extra two euros go to the Ministry's "Piano Olivetti", a fund for libraries in small inland towns. The audio guide is never part of the €7: you pay for that separately, wherever you buy it.

How do you buy the official Pantheon ticket?

Online on the Musei Italiani portal, with an account and a timed slot, or on the day at the ticket office and machines on the piazza.

  • Online: the official Musei Italiani ticket page sells timed tickets. You need an account first; set it up at home, not in the queue.
  • On site: the ticket office and vending machines take cash and cards while slots last. On-site sales close at 18:00, an hour before the doors shut.
  • Before Mass: sales stop about an hour before a service. On a Saturday that means no tickets after about 16:00; on a Sunday, none between about 9:30 and the end of the 10:30 Mass.

US travellers on the Rick Steves forum have reported US credit cards failing on the portal while PayPal worked. If the site fights you, the cash line on the day is the fallback: a March 2025 post put the wait at 15 minutes.

Skip the portal account: a timed entry plus a phone audio guide, handed over by a host on Piazza della Minerva.

What do Pantheon tickets on Viator cost, and what do you get?

From $10 for timed entry with a phone audio guide to $108 for a private guide. Every one includes the €7 entry.

All prices are from-prices per person in USD in 2026, and they move:

For comparison, the Pantheon's own chapter sells an audioguide visit at €17 and a guided visit at €27.50, entry included, on pantheonroma.com. The cheapest Viator options undercut that.

Is the official ticket or a Viator ticket the better buy?

If you only want to walk in and look up, buy the €7 ticket. Pay more when you want a story, a set time or someone to deal with the queue.

The difference between €7 (about $8) and the $10 audio ticket is a couple of dollars. For that you get a host who meets you, an audio guide and no portal account. That's fair value if you'd otherwise rent an audio guide anyway.

The live guide is where the price starts to mean something. At $14 the Crown Tours guided visit costs barely more than the audio ticket. Above that you are paying for a smaller group or a more expert guide, not for better access: every option uses the same doors.

Families should run the numbers. The ticket is free for under-18s, so on a booked tour the child price pays only for the guide or host. Check the child price at checkout before you book four places.

Is the Pantheon free on the first Sunday of the month?

Yes, for everyone. There is no online booking that day: you queue for a free paper ticket on site.

The next free Sundays are 1 November and 6 December 2026, then 3 January, 7 February, 7 March, 4 April, 2 May and 6 June 2027. Two catches. The Mass at 10:30 stops sightseeing for part of the morning. And the line is long: ArtVisitGuide puts it at 90 minutes to two hours in peak season.

Our view: if the €7 matters, come at 9:00 sharp or after 17:00. If your time in Rome is short, pay and pick another day. The free Sundays post has the full calendar.

Do you need to book Pantheon tickets in advance?

Not always. Off-season and in the late afternoon you can buy on the day. In spring and summer, book: the line for tickets by late morning runs 20 to 30 minutes.

A booked ticket gets you into the shorter line for pre-booked visitors, not straight through the door. One guest on the audio ticket wrote: "The “skip the line” still had us standing in line for about 20 minutes. Rome is very crowded!" On a bad day it is still far quicker. Another guest: "We saw people waiting in line for tickets for two hours and we went right past them with our skip the line entry."

Slots are timed, and the operators are strict about it. Crown Tours says late arrivals are not guaranteed entry; Kirba Tours does not refund no-shows or late arrivals. Plan the hour before your slot, not the minute.

Timed entry and a host who walks you to the pre-booked line, from $10.

When is a guided tour worth more than the ticket?

On a first visit, with kids old enough to ask questions, or if you want the dome explained while you stand under it.

Most people spend 25 to 40 minutes inside on their own. The room is one big circle, and without context you see it in ten. A guide fills the time with the things you'd walk past: the drains in the floor, Raphael's epitaph, the dome's lighter stone near the top. The guided tour or audio guide guide compares every format.

The beam from the oculus moves across the rotunda all day.

Is the Pantheon worth €7?

Yes. It's one of the best-preserved buildings of ancient Rome, nearly 1,900 years old and still in use, and the ticket costs less than lunch on the piazza.

Raise the bar for the add-ons, not the ticket. A $48 tour is worth it if the guide is the point. If you just want to stand under the oculus, the €7 ticket at 9:00 on a weekday is a bargain. What to look for once inside is in our oculus and dome guide.
